Middletown police have taken two local men into custody after an alleged robbery happened just outside of Levittown’s Highland Park neighborhood.

Marquis Taylor, 20, of Levittown, and Nicholas Pacitti, 19, of Fairless Hills, were arrested and charged with robbery, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, harassment and related offenses. Pacitti was released on 10 percent of $150,000 bail while Taylor remains in prison on 10 percent of $100,000 bail.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Monday night, officers responded to Highland Park Drive and Trenton Road for reports of a fight in progress. Officers soon observed one of the victims, and both defendants walking together towards Forsythia Drive, according to court documents.

The victim, who identified himself to police as the one who called 9-1-1, told officers that he was walking with some friends when both Taylor and Pacitti approached them, pulled the hoods on their sweatshirts down, took the victim’s backpack, and instructed he empty his pockets while holding a knife with brass knuckles to his stomach and threatening to stab him.

While Pacitti refused to speak with police, Taylor advised investigators that both him and Pacitti were headed to that location to steal $20 worth of marijuana from the victim. A combination knife with brass knuckles was found on Pacitti’s person.

Both men await a preliminary hearing set for December 10.

The suspect entered the store with a handgun, walked an employee to the cash register and demanded all the store’s cash, police said.

The suspect left the store and escaped the area via unknown means, police said.

Lt. Terry Hughes said detectives will obtain surveillance video and review it to see if any images are usable.

The normally quiet Stonybrook neighborhood in Bristol Township’s Levittown section has been hit with several burglaries in recent weeks, according to police.

Lt. Terry Hughes said detectives are probing several residential burglaries that have occurred in the neighborhood in recent weeks.

Police data shows the most recent burglaries happened between last Friday and Saturday in the 100 bock of Starlight Lane. In one burglary, electronics and jewelry worth $500 were taken and a gas generator, guitar and other items valued at $2,000 were taken in the other crime. Both homes were reportedly entered through a window.

Similar burglaries on both Shelter Lane and Stonybrook Drive were reported to police earlier in November.

The burglaries are suspected of being connected and investigators do have some clues, Hughes told LevittownNow.com.

Tullytown Chief of Police Daniel Doyle said the several areas of Stonybrook that fall in his town have not fallen victim to the string of burglaries as of Tuesday. In response to the recent incidents, borough officers have stepped up their patrols and a warning has been posted on social media.

Anyone with information on the Stonybrook burglaries is asked to call Bristol Township Detective Jason Callahan at 267-812-3041 or the anonymous tip line at 215-788-8289.

Embattled Attorney General Appoints Special Prosecutor To Unravel PornGate

Pennsylvanians have already suffered the indignity of learning that judges, prosecutors and other law enforcement officials have used state computer systems to exchange pornographic, racist and misogynistic emails.

Now, state taxpayers will pick up the bill for a team of special prosecutors hired to sort out the sordid details of PornGate.

Standing on the stage at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane on Tuesday announced she has tapped former Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler as a special deputy attorney general. He’ll lead a team of special prosecutors that will parse tens of thousands of inappropriate emails and determine whether ethical or criminal violations occurred.

“They demonstrate a complete lack of respect, tolerance for others and impartiality for the public they are sworn to protect,” Kane said of the illicit emails. “This behavior violates the constitutions of Pennsylvania and the United States, to which these men are sworn to protect.”

The process could result in the most thorough accounting of PornGate so far, but it comes at a cost.

Speaking at the televised press conference, Gansler said he will be paid the per diem rate of Kane’s $158,000 annual salary. That equates to about $433 a day. The arrangement follows the template set in the state’s now-defunct independent counsel law.

The Attorney General’s Office will also sign a contract with Gansler’s Washington, D.C.-based law firm, BuckleySandler, for support services for the investigation. The law firm’s rate will come at a “deep discount” typical for agreements involving attorneys general, Gansler said.

Full details of the arrangement were not immediately available Tuesday. Jeffrey Johnson, an assistant press secretary to Kane, said the contract was still being executed.

Gansler expects the investigation will cost less than $2 million, the cap set forth in expired independent counsel law.

“Our anticipation is to get it done relatively quickly and expeditiously and as low-cost as possible,” he said.

Kane introduced Gansler after displaying a sample of the illicit emails found on attorney general servers. They included photos of topless women, photos of African Americans that included racist jokes and a picture of a woman with a black eye that made light of domestic violence.

Kane has sporadically released the emails during her rocky tenure, often during times when she’s facing bad publicity. She announced the decision to hire a team of special prosecutors last week, on the same day a state Senate committee recommended the full chamber proceed with a process that could end in Kane’s ouster.

Senators are exploring that possibility after the state Supreme Court suspended Kane’s law license after she was charged with obstruction and perjury in connection to accusations she leaked grand jury material and then lied, while under oath, about her actions.

Those controversies have cast a cloud over Kane, who repeatedly has tried to shift the spotlight to the pornographic emails, which she has described as the symptom of a good-old-boys network out to thwart her. The scandal has ensnared state Supreme Court justices, prominent prosecutors and even a former cabinet secretary.

While one government watchdog said PornGate has been mishandled, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be investigated. Eric Epstein, coordinator of Rock the Capital, said a special prosecutor should have been hired upon the initial discovery of the emails.

“At this particular point, Kathleen Kane may not have the authority or the standing to appoint a special investigator,” he said. “However, we think a special investigation is not only necessary, but long overdue to sort out this mess.”

Kane and Gansler disputed the notion she could not appoint him because of her suspended law license. Still, Kane predicted some opponents might try to stonewall the investigation with “nonsense” the appointment represented the practice of law.

“And to the few who challenge it, including some members of my own staff, I pose a simple, three-prong question,” Kane said.  “Are you a white male? Are you or one of your buddies in this email network? Are you trying to get my job without the benefit of having to run for it and being chosen by the people of Pennsylvania?”

Kane still has her job for now, and she’s vowed to fight any attempt to usurp her. Handing off the PornGate investigation to Gansler raises the possibility Kane will take others down with her.

Though he is not licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania, Gansler said his team will have subpoena authority and grand jury power. He anticipates eventually releasing most of the inappropriate emails.

As of Tuesday, Gansler said he hadn’t seen any of the emails. He’ll start following the dirty digital trail soon, which could get even uglier by the end of the investigation.

“The scope is very broad,” Gansler said, “because we don’t know where it’s going to take us.”

A bomb threat led to the evacuation of Bristol Borough’s elementary school Wednesday afternoon.

Bristol Borough School Board Vice President Kelly Cochran told LevittownNow.com students and staff were evacuated from Snyder-Girotti Elementary School on the corner of Beaver and Pond streets around 2:10 p.m. after a bomb threat was found.

Police, who were not immediately available for comment, responded to the school and began a search to determine if the threat was founded, Cochran said, adding the search of the building could go on until 6 p.m.

Cochran described the evacuation as “orderly” and said all students and staff are safe.

Students’ belongings will be locked in classrooms overnight following the completion of the search. Cochran said the only exceptions would be for students who had medically-necessary items left in the classrooms.

Parents said they were notified of the bomb threat via a phone call from the district.

“The staff was magnificent in the supervision of everything,”  the school board vice president said.

The bomb threat comes weeks after similar incidents at the borough high school.

The green leafy plants growing in the woods off Lower Morrisville Road in Falls Township caught the eye of  the New Jersey National Guard members flying in a helicopter overhead. Upon further investigation, the plants were found to be part of a marijuana growing operation, according to law enforcement officials.

Falls Township police and Bucks County Detectives were alerted in spring to the alleged drug grow by the New Jersey National Guard member who observed the marijuana from the air during routine flights as part of the unit’s stateside drug efforts.

Falls Detective Sgt. Chris Clark contacted the Pennsylvania National Guard Counterdrug Unit and secured a helicopter ride over the alleged marijuana growing operation in the 200 block of Lower Morrisville Road.

“Once we were positioned about the area, we observed the same large outdoor marijuana grow operation,” Clark wrote in an affidavit of probable cause.

In August, Clark and Bucks County Detective David Hanks entered the “extremely wooded area” off Lower Morrisville Road and observed the outdoor marijuana grow location. On the scene, they observed several empty gallon water bottles, gardening tools, spray bottles of insecticide and a trash bag covering various items. Photographs and a small sample were taken from the location, police said.

Field testing of the plant sample turned up positive for marijuana, court records state.

Twice in September investigators returned and observed signs of changes at the grow site, obtained various items to be used for DNA and installed a trail camera, police said.

Within days, the trail camera picked up images of a male subject at the site. The images were submitted to a Bucks County list and identified by a corrections officer and a state trooper, according to court records.

In October, police encountered the suspect in Doylestown and obtained DNA samples from him, court papers state.

The suspect captured on the trail camera image and whose DNA was obtained from samples at the grow site was identified as Daniel Santos, 33, of Falls.

Police said they collected 24 pounds of marijuana from the wooded grow site.

Santos was charged with various drug offenses and jail on 10 percent of $950,000 bail.

Police say clues from the public might be the key to solving two daytime burglarizes in a Falls Township townhome complex.

During the day Wednesday, unknown suspect(s) burglarized two separate townhomes in the Oxford Crossing section. The two townhomes on Liberty Drive both had jewelry and cash taken, police said.

A police official said the fact the incident happened in townhomes that have limited points of entry leads them to believe someone may have seen something that could help detectives find the suspect(s).

Anyone with information that could help the police investigation into the burglaries is asked to contact Detective Stephen Reeves at 215-302-3305 or reevespd@fallstwp.com.

A new bench at Middletown’s Core Creek Park was installed in honor of a fallen Bensalem detective.

Recently, the Network of Victim Assistance (NOVA) dedicated a memorial bench in honor of late Bensalem Police Department Detective Kevin Cornish, who passed away suddenly at a 5k race in Philadelphia in January.

“Detective Cornish was a good friend and staunch supporter of NOVA, the Bucks County Children’s Advocacy Center and the victims and families with whom he came in contact as he investigated crimes and pursued justice. His bold personality and entertaining approach to NOVA trainings and the many other community activities he participated in made him well-liked as well as highly respected,” NOVA said in a statement.

Cornish, a resident of Northampton, served in the Secret Service before joining Bensalem police and working his way up to the rank of detective in the Special Victims Unit.

NOVA said Cornish was posthumously awarded the 2015 Outstanding Service Award by the nonprofit.

The bench is located at the Victims Arbor section of the county-owned park.

Pennsylvania State Police report they are looking for the public’s help to locate Megan’s Law offenders who have absconded or are wanted, including two men from Bristol Township.

From state police:

Pennsylvania’s Megan’s Law requires individuals convicted of a sexually violent offense to register with the Pennsylvania State Police and to update and verify their information periodically at an approved registration site. Those offenders who have failed to register, update their information, or verify their information as required are considered to be non-compliant with the Megan’s Law statute. This non-compliance is a felony offense. Once a warrant is issued for their arrest, they are considered “absconded.”

State police report they are looking for tips on the whereabouts on the following local men:

  • Luis Miguel Vasquez, 30, of the 1300 block of Veterans Highway (Route 413) in Bristol Township. The Tier I offender committed a sexual act with a child in 2006. He last registered with state police in 2011.
  • Warren George Simon Jr., 55, of the 60 block of Granite Road in Bristol Township’s Levittown section. The Tier III offender committed rape in 1995 and last registered with state police in 2014.

Officials said that statewide there were 145 Megan’s Law offenders who had active arrest warrants for failing to comply with the registration requirements. Click here to see a PDF with all absconders.

“Pennsylvania’s rate of sexual offender non-compliance or absconded offenders is 1.83 percent, which is well below the national average,” according to state police.

Anyone with tips of the whereabouts of Megan’s Law absconders can call state police at 1-866-771-3170.
